As part of the ICES DIALOGUE SERIES: 50 Years of EU-China Relations, and the the Institute for China-Europe Studies (ICES) is organizing a webinar on:
Date: June 26, 2025
Time: 17:15-18:30 CEST / 23:15-00:30 BJT
Location: Zoom (registration is mandatory)
In the current global disorder and geopolitical shifts, meaningful dialogue on security and
defense issues has become increasingly important within the EU. While searching for greater
autonomy, the EU balances its security ties and concerns regarding China and the US. Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine, the Israel-Palestine and Israel-Iran conflicts, and the decline of US
hegemony have further amplified the urgency of rethinking the security agenda and global
shifts.
Against this background, it is of great importance to discuss the role of China and the EU,
two major actors with global reach, in reacting to a possible global security dilemma and
shaping evolving security dynamics, from traditional defense concerns to emerging threats
like cyber conflict and critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. Despite apparent
differences, the EU and China share a stake in preventing conflict escalation, managing
global risks, and maintaining stability. This makes open, frank, and informed debates on
security necessary and essential to navigating an era of heightened uncertainty.
This webinar brings together a panel of expert speakers from Europe and China to examine where European and Chinese security interests converge, where they clash, and how dialogue can - or cannot - bridge the gap to address international security issues:
Ms. Isabell RAUE,
Research Assistant at ICES, will moderate the panel discussion.Mr. Li YANG,
Executive Director of ICES, will deliver the opening remarks.
