November 5, 2024, marked the 60th quadrennial presidential election of the United States of
America. Following it, the newly elected President, Donald J. Trump, will take office and
implement his domestic and foreign policy through his chosen administration. This will have
both an immediate and far-reaching influence on world affairs, including on the relations
between Europe and China. To get a clear picture of what will happen concerning such a complex
tripartite relationship, it is essential to explore the following questions: How will the
election result influence the Europe-US and China-US relations respectively? How will
Europe-China relations be affected by the outcome of the US election? Will the upcoming US
administration adopt its foreign policy, including its policy toward the EU, all through a
China prism? How will the EU and China react? Is it possible to achieve mutual “freedom of
action”?
On November 20, 2024, the Institute for China-Europe Studies (ICES) hosted
a hybrid expert discussion in Brussels to discuss the impact of the US elections on
Europe-China relations. Following the panel talk, the roundtable discussion and Q&A session

Mr. Yang Li, Executive Director of ICES, moderated the
discussion. The speakers from Europe, China and the U.S., making the event a tripartite
dialogue with perspectives of all three sides, featured:
