On May 27, the Institute for China-Europe Studies (ICES) conducted its first webinar of the dialogue series, ICES Dialogues: 50 Years of EU-China Relations. The webinar addressed the evolving trilateral relationship between the European Union, China and the United States, particularly in light of ongoing global trade tensions and the recent wave of tariff escalations. We were delighted to welcome our expert panel, consisting of:

  • Dr. Jacques PELKMANS, Associate Senior Fellow, Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS),
  • Sourabh GUPTA, Senior Fellow, Institute for China-America Studies (ICAS), and
  • Dr. ZHAO Chen, Senior Research Fellow and Professor, Chief of the Department of European Diplomacy, Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).
  • After the opening remarks of Mr. Li YANG, Executive Director at ICES, Ms. Isabell RAUE, Research Assistant at ICES, moderated the interesting discussion.

Engaging with each other and with the audience, the speakers discussed the latest developments on EU-US-China relations, delving into the underlying motivations and current state of the ongoing tariff war. Key discussion topics included negotiation strategies with the US, broader geopolitical considerations, ideological influences, the role of the WTO, and the implications for multilateral cooperation. Further, the discussion also featured projections on the future of bilateral and trilateral relations from all three perspectives.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the speakers for their valuable insights and to our audience for their active participation and interest.
